The hospitality campus of ROC Mondriaan fanatically started off the new year – 2023 – by participating in the Horecava, held from January 9 through 12 in the RAI in Amsterdam. Dozens of students from the School for Hospitality and for Facility Services, as well as from the International Hotel and Management School were active every day, both with participants with competitions and in the F&B service sector. For example, on Day 1, a team took part in the competition ‘The Tastiest Sandwich.’ On Tuesday afternoon there was a competition for the ‘Most Delicious Pizza 2023’. In a field full of Italian top talents, Thom Vink, a 2nd year student from the ‘self-employed cook’ course of study, drew some attention. He had the guts to participate, but he also made an exciting ‘fusion pizza with Surinamese dried cod (bakkeljauw)’ as a tribute to his Surinamese grandfather. This was reason enough for veteran top chef Robert Kranenborg to put Thom in the spotlight in the form of expresing unofficial encouragement! The jury had to critically assess a total of 14 pizzas, all served neatly in wedges by our students.
During this edition of the Horecava, our students, as is tradition, were involved in the Gastronomic Guild, in yet another hall at the RAI. The images speak for themselves and we can be proud of how passionate and professional our students from the ROC Mondriaan hospitality schools present themselves at these types of events.
