Working Visit IHMS students to Schiedam

Last week an interesting, two-part working visit was made by students from the IHMS Manager/Entrepreneurial Hospitality program. Location: ‘Molen De Walvisch’ and the Jenever Museum, both located in Schiedam.

The program included two short excusions. The guide / miller at the ‘Molen De Walvisch’ led the tour with a film and a story about the windmill and then led the group up quite a few steep stairs to the ‘circulation deck’, the platform where the miller can adjust the direction of the mill blades according to the wind direction. This was not an excursion for people afraid of heights, but it was very interesting to be informed about the history and function of the many mills in Schiedam.

The second part of the excursion consisted of a visit to the Jenever Museum, within walking distance of the Windmill De Walvisch. There, too, the group went on an interesting tour with lots of information and, amongst the beautiful exhibits, took a digital quiz. At the end of the tour, the group gathered at the jenever tasting (Dutch gin) in the museum. It was clear that the drink does not appeal to every student, even though there is currently a new trendy hype around the phenomenon of gin.
